Vernon Secondary Class of 1972 celebrates 50 years

Reunion slated for end of August in Whitevale, near Lumby

It will be a mid-week mingle for Vernon Senior Secondary School’s Class of 1972.

The class’ 50-year reunion is slated for Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Timber Ridge in Whitevale, outside of Lumby.

“It’s going to be a pretty low-key event,” said co-organizer Patricia Corbett (née Irons). She and husband Mark Corbett, along with Delores Maddocks, are serving as registrars for the milestone reunion.

“There was a push from our grads to just mingle. There’s lots of excitement surrounding the reunion.”

In 1972, VSSS was the only high school in town. The grad class, according to the yearbook, numbered 408 students.

The Mayor of Vernon in 1972 was Stuart Fleming, serving his first term. The B.C. premier, when the class graduated, was W.A.C. Bennett, who served 20 years as premier until he lost in September of 1972 to Dave Barrett of the NDP.

The Canadian Prime Minister was Pierre Trudeau.

The French Connection won the Oscar for Best Picture of the year. And the top three songs, according to the Billboard Top 100 chart of 1972, were American Pie by Don McLean at No. 3; Alone Again Naturally by Gilbert O’Sullivan at No. 2. And the No. 1 song of the year was The First Time Ever I Touched Your Face by Roberta Flack.

There’s still time to register for the reunion. To do so, or for more information, contact Patricia Corbett at patriciacorbett@telus.net; Mark Corbett at markcorbett@telus.net; or Delores Maddocks at vssclass72@gmail.com.
