B.C. United will have an official candidate for the Vernon-Lumby provincial riding following a vote Saturday, Nov. 4.

The former Liberal party will decide between two candidates: Kevin Acton and Duana Kennedy.

Acton is the mayor of Lumby, and has been since 2009. He is also the chairman of the Regional District of North Okanagan.

“Together, we can forge change through hard work to Revitalize, Reclaim and Rise,” he said while announcing his candidacy in August. Darrel Stinson, former MP for the North Okanagan-Shuswap has endorsed Acton for the candidacy, as have former Vernon mayors Akbal Mund and Wayne Lippert.

Kennedy is the current executive director of the Vernon Public Art Gallery. She announced her candidacy on Oct. 12.

“I’m really excited to take on this challenge. I love our community,” said Kennedy. “We have a great riding and I’m just really excited about the opportunity to move forward, take our issues to Victoria, and make some positive change for our community.”

Her candidacy has been endorsed by former Okanagan-Vernon MLA Tom Christensen.

The Vernon-Lumby riding is new for the upcoming 2024 B.C. provincial election, set to take place on Oct. 19, 2024.

Harwinder Sandhu is the current MLA for the Vernon-Monashee riding. The Monashee area is now under the Kootenay-Monashee riding, whose present MLA is Katrine Conroy, under Kootenay-West.
