A rescheduled power outage will close the Vernon Recreation Complex for the better part of a day next week.

BC Bydro previously informed Greater Vernon Recreation Services of a scheduled power outage that would affect the Recreation Complex on April 3. However, on that day, a windstorm caused downed power lines, knocking out power for 1,758 residents on Westside Road. As a result, BC Hydro wasn’t able to complete the scheduled maintenance at the rec centre as crews instead responded to the emergency.

BC Hydro has now rescheduled the repair at the Recreation Complex for Thursday, May 9. The city of Vernon says the outage is necessary to replace an aging transformer and will begin at 9 a.m. and last the majority of the day.

The power interruption will impact the Recreation Centre, the Halina Centre, Priest Valley Arena, Priest Valley Gymnasium, Vernon Curling Club and Vernon Boxing Club.

The Aquatic Centre will maintain limited operation with a morning lap and leisure swim available from 6:30 to 8 a.m. Drop-in swim sessions will be cancelled for the remainder of the day.

Recreation Services will directly communicate with program participants affected by cancellations arising due to the outage, and refunds will be issued if programs are cancelled due to the outage.

“Recreation Services apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this service interruption,” the city said.
