An annual inspection of your heating system now, before it starts to see heavy use, helps ward off issues down the road when its use is essential.

The last thing you want on a cold winter day is an unexpected furnace failure. Knowing what signs to watch for can help you stay ahead of the game and get your furnace replaced before the temperature drops.

“It’s a good idea to do annual inspections of your heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical systems, typically at a time of year when the system isn’t seeing heavy use,” says Ted Fox, owner of Fox Plumbing, Heating, Cooling and Electrical in Vernon. “In the case of heating, that means now is the perfect time to schedule your annual check-up.”

What warning signs might suggest your furnace is on the brink of a breakdown?

  1. What’s my age again? The average lifespan for a furnace is between 10 to 20 years, depending on its manufacturer, model number, maintenance and usage. Unsure of your furnace’s age? Check for a model number or look at your owner’s manual.
  2. Energy bill jump scares: Unexpectedly high energy bills can mean your furnace isn’t running as efficiently as it should be.
  3. Dust, dirt, soot and rust build up: Been doing more dusting than normal when your furnace is on? It might be time to replace your system.
  4. Low humidity: If the air in your home is unseasonably dry, your furnace could be to blame.
  5. Uneven heating: If your living room is sweltering while your bathroom is an ice palace, it’s time for a furnace check-up.
  6. Things that go bump in the night: While a little noise is normal, new rattles, buzzes or hums are not.
  7. Visible wear and tear: If you can see cracks and/or rust that’s another strong indicator that it’s time for a replacement.
  8. Frequent repairs: On a first-name basis with your HVAC repair tech? If you see your repairman more than your friends, it’s time to call for a free estimate.
