Grindrod residents can water outdoors using sprinklers again, but they’re limited to two days per week.
The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) lifted a water restriction that was imposed on July 8, which prohibited all outdoor watering for customers on the Grindrod Water system.
The RDNO said the restriction was lifted because of efforts to save water and reduce the demand for water during peak times.
The community is now under stage two watering restrictions, meaning residents can water their lawns and gardens outdoors using sprinklers but only on two specific days each week, depending on their street address.
The watering days are staggered to allow for a steady and sustainable draw on the water system which is important to avoid adverse effects to the safety and availability of drinking water, the RDNO says.
Watering between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. is not allowed at any time.
“It’s important to note that if the water usage becomes too high again, there may be a need to reintroduce a complete ban on all outdoor water use,” the RDNO said in a media release.
Watering will not be allowed on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. On Sundays and Wednesdays, residents with an even house address can water. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, those with an odd house address can water.
Residents can water can water any time by hand with a watering can or a hose wit ha spring-loaded shut-off nozzle. Drip irrigation is also allowed any time as evaporation is minimal when the water is applied directly at the plant roots.
