Winter Carnival bed races roll into Vernon

Four teams competed at the third annual event

Is a juggernaut dynasty brewing here in Vernon?

If one attended the third annual Total Fun Bed Races, they may agree, as team Toyota picked up their second straight victory at the Vernon Winter Carnival event.

Hosted at the Kal Tire Place parking lot, Toyota was matched up with three other teams; Total Restoration, Nixon Wenger and newcomer Reach Tire.

The racing teams had constructed unique vehicles that were affixed with four tires, and space to fit a mattress.

Maximum five members were allowed to push the Fun Bed, with one individual needed to stay inside of it.

Historically, the races used to take place on Main Street in the city, with actual hospital beds being used. It was cancelled previously and only just returned in 2022 after COVID.

At the race on Wednesday, Feb. 7, teams were allowed a walk through of the course, which consisted of several turns. Then, a practice run was permitted before two heats each from the competitors.

Toyota won, with a blistering time of 24.13 seconds. Total Restoration came second, with a 28.55. Reach Tire scored third with a 34.72 marker. They had a chance to improve on their time, but flipped over a pylon on their second attempt, which constituted a five second time penalty.

Bringing up the rear was Nixon Wenger at 35.35.
