The Allan Brooks Nature Centre in Vernon is ready to welcome the community to its massive annual garage sale.

The spring garage sale will take place Friday, June 16, and Saturday, June 17, and funds raised will help the Nature Centre continue to provide education and outreach about the natural environment.

Volunteers have arranged for item donations and spread the word about the garage sale for the past 20 years.

Mel Maglio and other Allan Brooks volunteers began collecting item donations for the event last fall.

“Our garage sales have a stellar reputation for a selection of quality items displayed and sorted into various categories,” said Maglio, who has been involved for over 20 years helping the society raise funds to continue its work.

“All funds raised through this sale will go to the Allan Brooks Nature Centre. As of now, we have furniture, including tables and chairs, an antique settee and armchair, a set of four oak chairs, chest of drawers, small desk and rocker, all in very good condition. We also have a huge selection of books, puzzles, hard wares, games, LPs, art decor, small appliances, framed art, bric a brac, lamps, and some other collectibles.”

Keely Schneider, volunteer coordinator at Allan Brooks, credits the sale’s past success to the work put in by dedicated volunteers and the community’s support for Allan Brooks nature programs.

“Planning for this event begins in the fall and there’s a lot of effort put into getting everything organized so people can access items easily,” said Schneider.

Past community response has shown that people understand the importance of these fundraisers and the value Allan Brooks brings to environmental education in the Okanagan. A major support to the garage sale is Elephant Storage. The company provides storage access for months at a time as the group prepares for these events.

“Without their support, we wouldn’t be able to plan and organize for these sales as well as we can,” added Schneider.

The garage sale takes place at 2206 23rd Avenue from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 16 and 17.
